I absolutely agree that it should be "were." However, many people, use "was." Also, spell check doesn't highlight it as a mistake. I suppose interchanging "was" and "were" could become as acceptable as interchanging will and shall.

Just think of the song: "If I were a rich man, yeidle deidle deidle deidle deidle dum...all day long I'd viddy viddy vum...if I were a wealthy man."

It would defeniatly be were because it is not something that holds true as of yet.
