The "plot" was concocted by Booth, Herod and gang on the day it happened. There was hardly any planning. Booth thought of killing Lincoln when he heard at approximately 11:00 AM that the President was going to attend the theater that night. Over a few drinks that afternoon, Booth and his idiot friends came up with the attacks on Johnson and Seward, among others. Months earlier Booth and some other folks planned to kidnap Lincoln. All in all, Booth and his acquaintances were pretty inept.

1. Are you asking why Lincoln, Johnson, and Seward were a part of their OWN murder plot? In which case the question is too ridiculous to merit any effort at all to answer it.

2. Are you asking why Lincoln, Johnson, and Seward were the VICTIMS of the plot to murder them. In which case the answer is that Booth and his group of morons were bent on making the North pay for the Civil War. Remember Booth was personally there when John Brown was hanged in December of 1859 and he vowed at that time to avenge the blood of those John Brown killed in Kansas and during the siege of Harper's Ferry. It is for that reason that Booth shouted after the assassination, "The South is avenged!"

Actually, there was some talk that Mary Todd Lincoln and the vice president and secretary of war were involved but it was never proven and quickly forgotten.
