I just got some m373 splitproof chisels online. One of the chisel blades has a tiny nick on it, another has a little 'blueing' on a corner as a result of heat, and one has a faded 'D' on the word ENGLAND on the face of the chisel. Are these normal results of manufacturing?
Was your set perfect or did it also have one or two tiny imperfections?
(The imperfections i mention are very small indeed. On the whole, the set is very tidy.)

If you bought them on Ebay rather than from a tool shop then they may be seconds quality. I used to work in a hardware store and Marple products rarely had any deffects. I would suggest they are either seconds quality or secondhand tools.

I have seen fake Marples tools but they are usually of very poor quality and easy to spot.

Genuine Marples Chisels are guaranteed for life. Take a hammer and beat the sh*t out of the chisel and then send them back if they fail. I've had mine for 20 years and they have'nt failed yet.

I have a set and the only imperfections on my set I put there. It is always possible manufacturing made a mistake. Take them back to where you bought them if you have a problem.

I once saw several sets for sale at a flea market. They were "Maples". An obvious knock-off, with poor quality. I have never seen anything that would fool a carpenter.

THAT BLUE COLOR IS BAD NEWS. IT MEANS THAT THE CHISEL WAS OVERHEATED WHEN IT WAS SHARPENED. WHEN IT GOT TO HOT IT RUINED THE TEMPER AT THE PLACE WHERE IT TURNED BLUE AND NOW IT IS SOFT STEEL. IT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP ITS SHARP EDGE AT THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS OVERHEATED-TOO SOFT.
