I have found that the best speed-reading "exercise" is not worrying over every word. Speed readers look at the meanings behind the words more than the actual words used to convey those meanings. Focus your attentions on the images the words create, not the words themselves.

It is probably true that some speed readers can read every word and even remember many things verbatim, but I doubt the majority have as photographic a recollection as Will Hunting.

Other advice, which I don't follow but should, would be to read things twice. First, skim something for main ideas and general content. You'll be surprised that a subsequent close reading will be much easier and go faster.
