Why does it have to be EITHER a naturally cyclical phenomenon that would happen regardless of us (right-wing stance) OR a man-made disaster due to our burning of fossil fuels, etc (left-wing stance)? Why has nobody mentioned option C: It is a naturally occuring event that happens every x number of years, but our actions are speeding up and/or intensifying the process

Not a bad question. The reason being it such a divided issue is as you have pointed out right wing vs. left wing. Anyone with common sense would review all scientific data, and temperature records as far back as they could go and would have at least a clue about it. Global warming is just another tool in bringing our great country to it's knees.

It is looked at as a cyclic phenomenon because that is exactly what it is. We just happen to be on an upswing right now and the fear mongers are capitalizing on that fact.
It wasn't so long ago that the same "scientists" were screaming about global cooling and the coming ice age (which should have been here in the mid 1990's).

That seems to be the way the question is being asked. If I disagree then I am immoral per Al Gore. If i agree then the planet has no cycles. Pretty much damned if I do damned if I don't.
