The joke was as follows: "Q: How do you get an elephant out of the theatre? A: You can't. It's in his blood." Am I over thinking this or just having a mental block? I'm no slouch and this 'joke' is really bothering me!

It's not going to be funny after the explanation, but here goes.

The set up is that you think about the size of the elephant and how it would get into a theatre and presumably fit either into the audience or onto the stage. The punchline, "You don't, it's in his blood" is a play on the fact that a lot of the time you hear actors and actresses asked why the got into "the biz" and they say "Oh, it's just in my blood." Thus, the comedy is in the absurd idea of an elephant in the theatre to begin with (picture that in your mind for a second) and then the juxtaposition of a completely different scenario for why the elephant is in the theatre (he's there because he was born to do it). The joke could just as easily have been told "How do you get an elephant out of the basketball court? You can't. It's in his blood."

It's the kind of joke that's only really funny if you're a theatre person (I am and got a very slight chuckle out of it), you've been up for way too many hours consecutively, or (not that you would) you've ingested some form or another of an intoxicating substance. Or, as it is known in my circle of friends a "Stupid o'Clock" joke.

As my Dove Promises chocolate wrapper just reminded me, "Don't think about it so much."

if it's in someones blood, it means they will always be doing it. The joke implys that the elephant is stuck in a theatre(building), when at the end it shows he is really an actor.

When it says ''You can't. its in his blood.'' it talking about the elephants trunk and maybe connecting it to opera. Since opera is done in a theater. Or maybe that particular elephant is just really good at entertaining people.

Are they implying that the elephant is an actor?

I don't get it either, even with the answers you got. I think that it is the worst joke ever.
