To say the best is alittle hard because the best Safeties are good becuz they are the best at certain things. If I had to put out some names, I would definitely say Troy Polamalu for one. He's insanely fast and really determined. Second Bob Sanders, he's a Safety that can run stop like a line backer and cover just as good as any other safety. John Lynch, although he's been around for a minute he still can hit harder than any other safety I've seen. As far as LB's I'd have to say Lofa Tatupu or Demarcus Ware. Yeah Brian Urlacher is a beast, but not only does he have experience under his belt, he is surrounded by a group of dependable players making his job alittle easier. Demarcus Ware and Lofa Tatupu still get their tackles and still do their jobs despite how the overall defense is doing, and they are young, both played really well when they were rookies (Tatupu Def. Rookie/year)

Ed reed of course.
B-Dawk is good but hes aging.
Roy Williams and Rodney Harrison arnt really all that good but not really good.
Troy Polamalu is good but not as good as ed reed.
In the NFC for linebackers has to be Brian Urlacher. He can drop back as a cover linebacker, or come up on the run and put a hit on the rb.
But there are some coming up with him.

Probably Ed Reed, not many out there that have all that he has to offer. As far as NFC linebackers go I like Lance Briggs, Brian Urlacher and Demarcus Ware

Ed Reed hands down. He's a total ball-hawk, a pretty decent hitter/run-supporter, and a skilled punt blocker -- scary thing, he's not even hit his prime IMO (career length wise he hasn't).
NFC LBs....hhmm, Derrick Brooks is still the best OLB despite his age. Lance Briggs is getting up there, and Julian Peterson is still pretty top notch, Keith Brooking is pretty good. for MLBs Brian Urlacher is/should-be the consensus, though Lofa Tatupu is looking to make a name for himself. Trotter has still got it, and Dan Morgan was good before all his concussions.
and Chris F ---get your facts straight buddy, Shawne "Lights Out" Merriman was the DRotY.

Roy Williams of the Cowboys and Adrian Wilson of the Cardinals have to rank up there near the top. They are both game changing defensive players.

Ed reed would be my first choice. But look out for Michael Huff of the Raiders in the coming years. This year (his rookie season) he led the Raiders to finish the season with the #1 ranked pass defense.
