I guess I never realized it until this year, but have not been able to get an honest answer.

I've often wondered the same thing. Perhaps it's because the voters feel that they need to take things seriously so they only consider films that are serious for the most part. It is said that comedy can be more difficult to achieve than drama.

Maybe there should be a separate award for it. There have been some really well done comedies. There are, however, a lot more comedies which are really quite forgetable.

But, the Oscars are run by tradespeople for tradespeople and since I'm not in that trade I am not qualified to vote for - let alone nominate - any films for consideration.

I think if a Comedy was a real piece of work, it could easily be up for awards. For example, About a Boy (not really a comedy per sae but is called a comedy) was up for best pic one year. The main problem in having a comedy award category is that comedy is arbitrary. That is, what you think is funny is not what everyone else thinks is funny, and the same goes for each member of the Academy. They would never be able to decide on those things that make a great comedy as opposed to there are certain things that make a good drama like great performances and a non-cliche story.

Little Miss Sunshine had it's small funny moments...
But I think the reason is because for the Oscars, most of the movies nominated are mostely dramas, because their the awards for the best and most achieved movies of the year. Comedies aren't really dramatic, there for they aren't nominated and most comedies aren't usually considered one of the best movies of the year. They usually go for something like, the departed or babel.

Comedies have been recognized.

They don't tend to be, because high drama is what we associate with good acting.

If you look at Best Pictures from past years, you'll see seio-comedies several times. Forrest Gump, Chicago, Shakespeare in Love... all examples of movies that were not lacking in humor. But, as you can see, they are quite different from "Dumb and Dumber."

While Best Picture rarely goes to a comedy, best actor/actress and best supporting actor/actress have gone to comedy performances.

Lastly, there are sufficient comedy nominations, even if they don't win.

I agree. I think Little Miss Sunshine should have won Best Picture. It was such a well done movie.
