I would think unconscious means without awareness. Conversely, sleeping is a state of detached awareness, so to speak.
When we are unconscious, we do not dream.
Good question!!! :) Curious to see the answers you will get!
Hope this helps !

This is a very good question I had to ponder greatly.
There differences between these two states are one you have control and the other is out of you control. Both states you can have dreams. Both have the element of lack of awareness.
Having a trauma-induced unconscious is a healing mechanism so this state is associated with a traumatic event the renders consciousness out of our control. Usually you don't have a choice when to awake from an injury induced unconsciousness. It is a matter of waiting for the body to heal itself to regain full awareness. This particular event has an outside influence like a poison, hit on the head or drugs to facilitate this unconsciousness.
Sleep is a state you have full control over you ability to waken from this state. It to is a healing mechanism of rejuvenation that is fully under our control. I know what you may think there are people that can't be awaken from an atomic bomb blast. Yes that is true but a person still can learn to be aware even when a sleep. But still it is under a our control.

Generally the difference is the ability to respond to stimuli....unconscious people do not respond; asleep people can be aroused and respond.
Unconscious:
Lacking awareness and the CAPACITY for sensory perception; not conscious.
Sleep:
1 : the natural periodic suspension of consciousness during which the powers of the body are restored -- compare REM SLEEP, SLOW-WAVE SLEEP

From personal experience, I didn't dream when I was unconscious. I'm told there is nor REM (rapid eye movement) phase when you're unconscious. When I sleep I dream. There is a REM state in the first 20 minutes of sleep.

Sleep is something you body needs to regenerate itself. Unconscious or comatose is something totally different and a medical condition with many detrimental causes. Rather go for sleep.
