heres the thing, it doesnt matter what sex you are, when you take your car to a mechanic and tell them you a check engine light on, they see a sucker.
if you take your car in because you have low coolant, they are just wanting to take thousands from you.
now, if you get to know basic automechanics, you will save thousands.
say your check engine light is on, do not take it directly to a mechanic, take it to autozone, and they will pull the codes for free.
say they pull code p0123. That is the throttle position sensor. buy a tps from autozone, (if you dont do the work yourself), take your car to a mechanic and tell him that you have a faulty tps and you have the part, and need it replaced.
They will see someone who has an understanding of mechanics, and wont try to make you replace an expensive distributer which has nothing to do with the problem.
say you have low coolant levels even though you constitally fill it. What you do, is get on the internet and either in a forum based on your car (examples: http://www.probetalk.com http://www.bimmerfest.com http://www.mx6.com http://www.tundrasolutions.com http://www.saturnfans.com http://hondahookup.com ) or in yahoo answers, and ask them what to do if your coolant is disappearing.
they will tell you to use a flourescent die, to see if you have a leak. you drive the car for a bit, then take a black light and shine on engine... if you see puddles of glowing liquid, you have a leak. Now if you take this to a mechanic before you know you have a leak, hes seeing a sucker who has a cracked head, and its about ready to charge you $2000.
just getting to know the basics of your car will save you thousands. if you show the mechanic that you are not a sucker, he wont screw you.
there are also other ways to find a more trusted mechanic, but are much less reliable. if you call a mechanic in the phone book, ask him how long the wait is. If he has a waiting list until next week, he has alot of business... thats a good sign. if he says he can take you in tomorrow, beware.
you can also search www.bbb.org (Better Business Bureau) for complaints, but this isnt always reliable when it comes to newer mechanics in the area.

Have a male friend drive it in for you and you just act like you along for the ride.
