It is caused by the particular shape of the tub or basin you have. There are some that always go down counter clockwise and they just happen to be designed a little differently.
It has NOTHING to do with where you are with respect to the equator (see SCOPES debunking site as to why your basin would have to be a hundred miles wide for that to be a factor.)

As everyone else says its to do with which hemisphere you live in. Just as a matter of interest I once saw a program on TV where they had a bath actually on the equator and when they pulled the plug out the water just went straight down, neither clockwise or anti clockwise - just straight!!!

there is been a super sort of dialogue approximately this over the years... it is unquestionably not something to do with distinctive hemispheres we live in... human beings have stated that it might pass down clockwise if one lived interior the northern hemisphere, and anticlockwise interior the southern... whether, we've come to conclusions that it has to do with the Coriolis result, that's sort of splendid because of the fact it does certainly play a function in vortex rotation for draining drinks that have come to kick back for an prolonged time in a sink/tub, whether it is extremely to do with the main factors of your plug hollow and basin.. For a imprecise occasion.. Screws can in basic terms be screwed in one way... or they are going to be screwed out returned superb? So if the main factors on your plug hollow are directing the water clockwise, it is going to not un-drain away to pass anticlockwise..? desire this made some experience and helped you out...

This is because we are in the Northern hemisphere, in the southern hemisphere it would go down the plughole ant-clockwise. It is the gravitational pull of the moon

Do you notice that the people who still believe this myth give you no sources. Only those that don't believe that the Coriolis effect influences the way water spins down the drain give sources. This should tell you something, check their sources.
