...besides taking it apart and cleaning it after every wash is there a solution to keeping it clean?

well, I have never had that problems, but, if you buy the little ball they have at the dollar store to put your fabric softener in, then you won't have to worry about it anymore.

I take mine out and clean it every couple of months and I don't have a problem Maybe it is the softener. Oh also do you leave your washer open when it is not in use? I used to leave my old washer closed all the time and I had a problem with mildew all over so that may be part of it. Just a thought.

Do you dilute the softener with water BEFORE you put it in the dispenser? If you dilute it first, it shouldn't cause the mold.

Better yet, switch to the sheet softener.

Are you talking about the downy dispenser or the one that comes with your machine? Because the downy dispenser I just rinse when I am done with the laundry and let it dry upside down. If if came with the machine, I have yet to have that problem. Good luck.
