There is no one biggest conflict. What makes a great play great is that it explores many different themes and conflicts.

For me, the play spins on the axis of Biff's return to the Loman home after many years as a drifter. He returns because he is searching for answers as to why he turned out to be a failure and a drifter. When he was in High School, he was in is glory years and he was, according to his dad, destined for greatness. And, he thought that Willy, his dad, was a great man. It was an idyllic father/son relationship.

But what the play reveals in its climactic scene is that Biff, encouraged by his dad, was used to taking short cuts in life and that everyone was more than willing to help him out of jams and to ignore his failings simply because he was popular or, as Willy says, 'well liked.'

In a Boston Hotel room where Biff tracks down his dad to get him out of yet another jam, Biff discovers that Willy is not a great man, but a pathetic, philandering mediocrity and this revelation is a shock to Biff's innocence from which he never recovers.

Man vs. self

Willy clearly has some short comings which he is attempting to live through his son, Biff, but he needs to come and realize that mistakes in the past cannot be fixed through someone elses life.
