Hi
Congratulations! I just had a baby six months ago and I was concerned about the same things.
I needed DIAPERS! and a changing area for him. The pack n play with a changing top was great to have set up in the main room. You need diaper ointment for rashes and baby soap, wash cloths , as well as a bath tub.
Get the playtex drop in bottles, less cleaning and really does help with the gas. Get a drying rack for your bottles and nipples.
You will need little blankets to swaddle the baby and onsies!
Also, babies like soft music, so get some baby mozart or anything soft to play in their room. I would also suggest a cradle swing, it helps soothe them by rocking with music. For times when nothing you are doing is right!!!!!!!!!Get your nursery finished if it's not already and relax now while you can!
Best of luck to you

Onsies, diapers, a car seat, a stroller, a few outfits, socks, hats, hooded towels, wash cloths, baby shampoo, diaper rash ointment, a crib, crib sheets. I wouldn't buy too many blankets, as that seems to be the first thing everyone will buy for you. You'll need a high chair eventually, but not right away. I liked having a bouncer myself. You may want a swing, but not everyone likes them, since they tend to be kind of big. I used a bassinet for the first few months. Bottles if you're not breastfeeding. Nursing pads, whether you are or not (you'll leak for a little while either way).

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Changing Supplies
Needed: diapers, wetwips, vaseline, portable changing pad
Not Needed: changing table, baby powder, baby wipe warmer
Diaper Rash Cream: I have a store purchsed brand but if the baby is less then 1 month you should take infant to Dr. We did and got a perscription of Nystatin (diaper rash & yeast cream)
Cleared rash up quickly. My daughter was trying to get a bump last week and I applied the Nystatin and rash never errupted. Diaper rash was prevented.

Food
Needed: Breast Milk or Formula, bottles, nipples
Not Needed: bottle warmer (my baby only had room temperature drink never warmed her bottles. she is 4 months.

Clothing
Needed: Onesies and Sleepers (1-3 months)
Not Needed: Tons of clothing (they grow so fast)

Sleep
Needed: Crib
Not Needed: bassinet (good to have if you want baby close by)

BathTime
Needed: Body wash and baby shampoo
Optional Baby Tub- I used the sink with a baby seat for the tub.
I started using the tub after 1 month.

Misc
Needed: Thermomiter, blankets to wrap baby in, finger nail clippers, bibs

Use the extra thick cloth diapers as a burp towl. The ones in the store that are labeled burp cloths are too thin.

Bassinets aren't really necessary, they only use them for 3 months maybe less.
Lots of sleepers are good, but also get them in 3-6 months(you might have a big baby)
Onsies, for a newborn you don't need many outfits just two will do. They sleep over 18 hours around the clock, so no need to get them real dressy. My trick, I buy a couple sleepers that are SUPER cute, then you get plenty of use out of them and baby will be dressed up all day if you want.
LOTS of bottles if you choose formula or to pump. 8 (4) oz. bottles and 6 (8) oz. bottles. Just two blankies, sleepers are usually warm enough, but you may need them next winter if you live some place cold. Bibs. because they drool and spit up alot. So you don't have to constantly change them. Plush toys, my daughter likes to bang her toys against her leg, so I give her soft ones. And if you live some place cold, a carseat cover. Then you don't have to put too many layers on baby. I'd skip the mobile and just buy a crib toy like "ociean wonders" it mesmorizes baby to sleep. And you don't have to take it down after 5 months.

Actually not much. You won't even need a crib for weeks. Mine slept in a bassinet next to my bed until he was about two months old.

Here's a list of must haves:

Onesies (lots of those)
Diapers
Wipes without fragrance
Cloth diapers for burping (don't waste $ on burping towels)
Soft blankets
Socks
Mobile if you have a crib (which we used as his changing table)
Pacifier (orthodontic)
Bouncy seat that vibrates
Car seat
Stroller
Rear-view mirror thing to see the baby
Baby monitor if you have a big house
Sling if you were like me and carry baby everywhere
Bottles with disposable liners
Breast pump
A few toys--no stuffed animals with baby!

If you can afford Gap, get the clothes from there. They cost more, but they're soft and they last. Try consignment stores, too, to get the furniture and clothes. Babies don't need 3/4 of what is sold, so don't waste your money. You'll need it later when you have to buy shoes and jeans every three months because they outgrow them so fast. :)

Grats!!

You just need the basics. You will need the following: Crib, crib sheets (not a comforter), receiving blankets, diapers, wipes, desitin (get a tub it will last a long time), onesies, sleepers, hat, socks (shoes not necessary until they start walking), bottle and formula unless you breast feed, a car seat, baby towels and wash clothes, Baby wash (can be used on their head too), baby power, a very small bottle of baby oil if the baby has cradle cap (you won't use very much), diaper pail, bibs, cloth diapers work great a burp rags.

What you don't need: Dreft or similar product unless your baby has allergies. A perfume and dye free laundry soap is sufficient. A changing table (It's easier and safer to lay a blanket on the floor and change him there or in his crib). wipe warmers and bottle sanitizers.

Bottles, bottle brush, sleepers, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, petroleum jelly if you're having a boy and getting him circumsicised, crib and/or bassinet, bouncy seat and/or swing - you'll want one!!, car seat (a head rest is very useful since they can't hold their head up yet), a pacifier if you're going to let them use one, diaper bag, hair and body shampoo, lotion, formula (if using), etc.

Best advice, walk through the baby isles at the store and write down the things you think you'll need. Walmart and other sites offer many lists of the things you'll need.

carseat, onsies, bottles, sleepers, blankets, crib or play pen(somewhere for the baby to sleep), bouncy seat, diapers, wipes(wipe warmer is not needed, as it can cause bacteria to grow within the wipes), you can steralize bottles without a bottle steralizer(all you need is water and a pot), drying racks for the bottles,(If you have a dishwasher then you don't need a steralizer or drying racks because the dishwasher does it all for you), bibs, towels, wash cloths, baby relieft kit (mylicon, motrin, all the medicines you'll need for your baby if he/she were to get sick), thermometer, nail clippers and files, and any other odds and ends you think you might need. Babies r us should have a list of things you should get for your baby. Good Luck!

not nearly as much as you think!
you can go to walmart and get a medical kit it comes in a pack for 10 bucks.
basic onezies.
lots of towles to catch spit up (my advice just use old tshirts you dont want or cloth dipers work really well)
dont by a diaper bag the hospital will give you one.
other than a cradle or (the carseat worked better than a cradle because she was gassie and she had to sleep sitting up)
you wont need as much as you think!
