Prince of Persia:, Warrior Within Torches Question?

I noticed in the hourglass chamber that there is always one torch out or unlit. What does this stand for? If the symbols on the floor represent the life upgrades, what does the torches mean?

I'm not entirely sure about the torches, but this much I know. If you find all of the life upgrades, you will earn the Water Sword. This allows you to reach the good ending, but you will have to fight the Dahaka to complete the game though.
