This saturday, I'm going to go eat a private dinner with my girlfriend's parents with high hopes that they approve of me asking their only daughter to marry me. Her parents adore me, but how do I go about it? I know I'll be nervous since they're old-fashioned, so I want to make sure I do it right. Any suggestions that will help seal the deal? We both have talked of marriage and how we're ready, we just have to convince the parents! I thought getting shot in Iraq while in the Army was tough, but this could be an even tougher task!

Bring a dozen roses to her mother and a bottle of wine to her Dad. Also before you go, discuss with your girlfriend that you are going to formally ask her parents at the dinner table for her hand in marriage. This way she knows what is going to happen. What you can say is the following:
Mr. and Mrs. ................I just want to let you know that I love your daughter........very much and I want her to be my wife, but I respect you both so much and you both have been so kind to me that I want to ask for your approval. We both feel we are ready to get married and that we love each other so much and want to be together for the rest of our lives. We would like to get engaged this Christmas..............and marry the next year.
Then wait for their reply and see their reaction. From what you say they adore you, so I really think they will approve and be so happy for you and your girlfriend. I wish you both the best of luck.

I think it would look really good if YOU took them out to eat. As in paying for it. Then order a bottle of wine (if they drink) and go about your dinner and right before the food comes you should say to them "I want you both to know I love your daughter very very much and I want to do anything to make her happy and that's why I'm asking you both for permission for her hand in marriage". Then when the food comes you can have a distraction if it goes wrong or they'll be double excited because they're hungry and they boy that they really like is about to ask their daughter to marry her. If they like you then it'll be fine. Good Luck and keep us all posted on how it goes.

I used to try and rehearse the perfect lines to say to people. When I was caught up with those specific words, I would always screw it up and stutter and all that. My freedom came when I just started speaking form the heart. Tell her parents how much you love her and how you can't wait to spend the rest of your life with her. Just speak from your heart, and I swear anything you say will be the right thing.

How old are you? If you are older than 21, don't ask just tell them that you and XXXX are getting married and that you would like their blessing and approval.
On a side note - DON"T get married if you are heading out to be deployed. If she loves you she will wait.

Just take a bouquet of flowers for her and one for her mom too. Then, be as much of a gentlemen as possible and try not to be nervous, then take a deep breath during dessert and ask them.

Spend less time worrying about how to kiss your future in-laws' patooties, and more time worrying about if you're making a huge mistake by getting married.

I personally don't think your girlfriend's parents should marry her, since that's incest, and polygamy all in one.
Have you thought about possibly marrying her yourself?
