I too have had problems with ethernet adapters, and i can tell you there is no good way to test them due to numerous kinds of undetectable failures that can occur. Here are some things i have found:
1. Computer doesnt acknowledge card is in the slot.
2. Driver wont install without an error.
3. Card will transmit but not recieve, and vice versa...
4. Operating System detects network rj45 cable unplugged even though it is plugged in correctly.
5. When set to obtain IP address auto, card stops responding after computer is on for awhile.

My suggestion is ethernet cards are cheap, why frustrate yourself, if there is a hardware problem get rid of it!

If you want to see if the network card works you can always hook it into your computer and install the driver hook it up to the network & see if it works. If it doesn't then you need a new one if it does then your good to go. There are also some programs out there that will let you run a diagnostic test on your computer that will tell you if the network card is good or not & it well test other parts of your computer too. I always use a computer i have laying around for test purpose's I hook cards, hard drives basicly any computer part that needs tested and see if it works. Actually been a real time saver for me.

to test the network card you need the network card diagnostics utilities from the maker for the NIC card. depending on the computer or device that you installed the NIC into.
To test connection and proper settings you can always see if in Windows it shows up in MyComputer - Device Manager.
If you can see no 'x' on the device then the NIC is working fine.

Go to Start, Run and in the Open box, type 'cmd'. You will get a window that looks like the old 'DOS' screen. Type ipconfig to look at your ip address. If you don't see something that looks like '192.x.x.x', then something is wrong. Type in 'ping 127.0.0.1. You should get a string of 'Relpy from 127.0.0.1:. That is a basic test.

Depending on your software, you can slide it in, connect to the internet with your card and do the following.

open cmd.exe by clicking start / run and type cmd.exe or cmd

now type ping www.google.com ,

if you got an error your card doesnt work,

if you receive data your card works

Hope that wasnt confusing....
