I just got a 5 week old hampster Friday and since yesterday he has been trying to bite me when I hold him. I don't hold too tight, I let him walk on my hands and I didn't smell like I had any food. I love my hampster and if I punish him he might just want to bite me more. If you can help me with this I'd really apreciate it. Thanks. ps. If you got any other hampster tips that would be great!

I got a hampster chew stick but he won't chew it and I wash my hands before I handle him and I play with him in the evening. I just don't get it. What can I do to make him happy. By the way, for no good reason, I'd like to tell you that his name is Stanley. He's so cute!

I definitly DON'T punish him. When he tries to bite me I just gently put him back down in his cage. And I don't pick him up most of the time he choses to walk onto my hand. Man, hampsters are complicated!

Try putting some of the bedding on your hands so that he can smell it humans have natural oils on their hands that they can smell being that he is so young there really is not much you can do but hold him so try that and good luck.

If The PPl In The Shop Didn't Tell You , Youre Not Ment To Touch The Hamster Till A Week After Buying Him. This Helps Him Get Used To His Surroundings .

You've only had him a few days. He doesn't know you, he's used to being left alone in a cage at the pet store. Just stick your hand in the cage every once in awhile without picking him up. Let him get used to your smell. After a few days he shouldn't be so scared.

Well if he just did it recently, it's probably because you're interrupting his sleep time. They sleep during the day and are up at night.

Before you handle him, make sure he's awake and that you've washed your hands. Even if you don't think your hands smell like food, hamsters have very good noses! They can smell food when you can't.

Hi :)

I think you may be waking him up early! To get him to stop biting and nipin you, i think you should just put your hand in there cage and do this every day. They will soon get that your not going to hert them. You will never be bit again unless you be very mean to your hamster! p.s: Is it hamster or hampster because in the UK its hamster! lol :)

i wouldnt keep punishing the hamster anymore cause maybe the reason he is biten you that mean youre hurting him or he just want soemthing to chew on like a hamster toy stick or he want you put him down on the floor isntead walkin around youre hand .

Yeah, training a hamster isn't really possible, unless you train it to come when you feed it or something. Buy some neosporin and bandaids and keep trying to get him used to you.

I have no idea if this would work for hamsters, but when a guinea pig starts nibbling you, you should tap him on the nose. not enough for it to hurt, but with enough force that it says to him "no"

Hamsters tend to do this and they will not respond to punishment.
