I'm not even talking about financing the "re-education" portion of it, I'm talking about trying to figure out how to afford the 50% or more paycut.

Right now I'm a Senior Software Analyst and I've been seriously considering going to school for education. Since I have no college degree at the moment, I'd definately be committed for the 4+ year stretch, but I can do it part time and pay for that as I go and continue working, that's not an issue.

The issue is that when I actually **** careers to education I'll be going from the highest paid to one of the lowest paid career options on the board.

I'm sure that seems completely senseless to some but you have no idea how agonizing it is to be forced to continue doing something you have no passion for simply because it's the only thing you can think to do that earns as much money as it does. And with the added requirement of a wife and children, simply "cutting back" isn't exactly a "long-term" solution.

I totally understand what you're going through! If you really hate your job, go for it! You'll never regret getting an education, and who knows what opportunities might come your way?

The computer industry is changing rapidly as well, and you might find that you'll be able to combine your love for teaching with your experience as a software analyst. It's not just children that need education.. as you know from personal experience many adults go back to school to change careers or get additional training. You might find a lot of satisfaction in adult education :)

At any rate there is more to life than just working to get more stuff.. if your pay is enough to live comfortably and you spend your work day doing something you enjoy, you'll be far richer than you are now.

Do it! I think life is about being happy. Its hard to say and understand but money should never make your decisions for you. Its not about making money to start a family, your family will always be sucessful if you follow your heart and not money. Its not hard to have a succesful life without money, just change your view on success. I might not have answered very well but I hope I helped a little. Get a wife thats not worried about money and loves life and being happy.
