If you cannot select it due to there being a lot of play in the gearstick, its the gear linkage. If not, then its the gearbox.

I had this problem. The white plastic retainer had broken in the gear linkage, allowing the plastic spindle to come free at one end-hence loose feeling gearstick. You can undo the 4 torx screws at the base of the gearstick and push back the spindle if not too damaged or popped out (The cover under the gearstick should pop off easily for access). For me this only worked a day (got me home) or so and then bought a second hand gear linkage/selector. Good luck.

Is there another gear opposite to reverse on ur gear lever, if it hasnt chances are the bush on the gear shift rods have either worn or broken or the rod has popped out of its bush or bushes, if u have prob with another gear then its the bushes on the gear shift rod, otherwise it may be a simple adjustment of the linkages.
Let me know if I have been of any help.

The fact you bought a Renault is most likely the cause.

Could be the linkage that needs adjusting or could be a gearbox problem
