my boyfriends family goes out to eat a lot, and on weekends, Im usually going out with them. But I am trying to loose weight right now, (or at least not gain any), but it seems hard to do that when you are eating out 3 or 4 times a week. What are some healthy choices when dining out?

I empathize. It's hard to do this, be social and not feel the pressure of conforming to everyone's else's dietary choices without having to 'only order a salad.'

I suggest that you choose entrees that are grilled or steamed. Avoid things that are fried, have heavy sauces, etc. Always ask for dressings 'on-the-side' and don't use all of it, either....only 1/3 of it.

Don't order sodas as your beverage, stick with water and a lemon wedge or a diet soda if you must. No alcohol (high in calories).

Watch portion control, too. No one says you have to clean your plate - don't feel guilty for taking doggie bags home from restaurants.

Also - be careful to watch out for stuff served before dinner - like bread or chips. Don't eat these....

Skip appetizers altogether - but if you can't avoid them, choose a small side salad or a cup of soup. Other appetizers are fattening and can ruin any diet.

Good luck.

Always get a salad with dressing on the side, stick with oil and vinegar, and stay away from cream based dressings. Pass on the bread. Try to order a broiled chicken or fish entree with vegetables, pass on potatoes or rice ask for double veggies, most restaurants let you do that. Also, check the menu for the healthy section, most are doing that now.

After dinner, if at all possible take a walk around the block, also helps digestion.

And, if dessert has to be ordered, share!

Whenever I have to eat out I always get a meal that consists of a grilled or baked lean protein, a steamed veggie or a salad, and no bread or potatoes. The only way I eat potatoes at a restaurant is if it's baked w/ no butter or sour cream. Rice with no gravy or buttery sauces are good (pilaf, that sort of thing). Menus have a lot of creative dishes that consist of those things. Different types of grilled chicken salads, grilled fish dishes.

Also, I drink diet soda or unsweetened tea and sweeten it myself.

A trick I heard of is to ask for a take out container as soon as you get your meal, or even when you order so they bring it right away. Immediately cut everything on your plate in half and put half of the food in your take out for the next day, then thoroughly enjoy the half left on your plate. No thinking about it, just do it. An added bonus is that if the meal was reallly excellent you get to enjoy it twice and if it wasn't that good, you haven't wasted calories on food you didn't really like.

I go for grilled chicken or grilled fish with salad, if it comes with chips ask for no chips but extra salad. If it comes with sauce eiter ask for it 'on the side' or with none. It is really hard eating out when you are trying to be good, very tempting to be naughty! Make sure you are not starving when you go out so that the tempation doesn't win.
Good Luck

If you choose to join wieght watcher, then every restraunt has low fat choices for you to choose from and they are filling. If you do not want to do that. Rember portion sizes, most restraunts serve portions enough for 2 people. Choose low fat meals, or make the waiter get your meal the way you want it. Eat a chicken sandwhich with a salad rather than a burger and fries. I hpe this helps.

I always order a salad with grilled chicken when I'm out. See if you can have them make you than with a balsamic vinagrette. You can also substitute steak or shrimp for the chicken!
