When it comes to issues affecting a person's personal life (abortion, gay rights, prayer in schools) the Democrats want to keep the government out and let people make their own choices, while the Republicans think these are areas the Government should impose their views on the people.

When it comes to financial issues (tax rates, business freedoms, and welfare) the Democrats want the government making decisions for the people while the Republicans think that people are better off choosing for themselves.

On foreign policy the Democrats tend to think we can reach a negotiated settlement with anyone while the Republicans believe there are people that can not be trusted, negotiated with, or be safe to leave alone.

Then, of course, no single politician fits any of these areas exactly the same. And most of them seem willing to compromise their beliefs to get a deal done or to win an election.

I the most basic sense republicans believe in small government, low government expenditures and low taxes. Democrats believe in larger government spending thus with implicitly higher taxes.

All of the social, military, and other things that have entrenched themselves into the parties lately have perverted the true tennants of the parties and now clear definition has to include social issues which were never major concerns by the federal government when the parties came to power since those were left mostly to the sates.

Democrats try to make you think they can save everyone, truth is not everyone wants to be saved. Socialized medicine is the perfect example, Clintons have been trying to ram this down the American people's throats for a decade and its about to start up again. However, no one in government office will be apart of this program. The taxpayers will foot the bill for private doctors for the rich and middle-class gets the shaft... AGAIN.

By the way Republicans have its own set of problems.

It would be too long to describe. However, I would like to state that the main difference is the way each party sees the role of Government.
For Democrats, the Government is this benign giant who will provide for us. We should hand our money to the Government and let it make the important decisions.
For Republicans, the Government has a very strict role: guarantee national defense and uphold the law.
The role of the government should be limited.

There are a LOT. One of the most important ones are that Democrats want to control everything. They want to tell you how to live your life at every turn. They want to take your hard earned money and give it to those they consider less fortunate instead of making half of them get a job. They would rather spend your tax money on needless social programs than on defending this great country. They talk big talk about emotional issues like human rights, health care, and how they care about the average guy. Bunk!! They could care less. All they want is the money and the power. When they don't get it they start pouting, crying like 3 year olds, and criticizing those who are in control. Republicans are much more refined. They will not take your money for needless bleeding heart social programs. They will not tell you they care about you then mess you over. Yes, they support business. This is a good thing. When business do good they hire people, when they hire people it takes people off the Democrat induced social bail out system. As companies grow they pay more taxes, when they do that, we get taxed less because the government is getting in enough legitimate monies. When people are working they are more healthy. They spend money on trips, shopping, and buying duarbale goods like cars, and houses, and TV's . This has a positive rippling affect. When the products are selling, businesses need to step up production, they need to hire more people to do that, and the cycle continues as more people come off the social roles and spend money in the economy making it more healthy and productive. All of this is positive.

Lately the only real difference seems to be that Democrats embrace the secular and humanism, while Republicans embrace Christian religion... otherwise, not much difference.

there are no differences -- they are merely different sides of the same coin.

the only time a candidate from either party takes a "stand" on a specific issue - like abortion or capital punishment - it is to appease or woo a certain segment of voters.

traditionally, democrats were more big-government, welfare-state oriented than republicans. the current iteration of republicans still talk "small government", but the federal government has grown more in power, scope and spending than at any other time in history. this is HARDLY "small government". so you see -- no difference!!

First you have to understand what politics is

politics is the basic allocation for power/resources/ influence

then you have to realize that parties get their power from platforms and groups

democrats beleive the power of the united states comes from the middle class and the workers

republicans believe the power of the united states comes from the most powerful businesses and the wealtiest citizens

everything else flows from those two basics and if you look at those conclusions you can understand how either party will side on a given issue
