Just because we can use gene therapy on humans, should we?

Of course we should. the term "Gene therapy" seems to give everyone the willies, like it's some frankenstein type experiment going on and we are "messing with nature".

The truth is, gene therapy is often simply providing a protein that our body was supposed to provide in the first place. It's really no different than taking medicine, or vitamins or anything like that if you look at it from that angle. The only difference is in the delivery. But with people injecting Botox and Collagen and ingesting all kinds of chemicals with their preserved food, I really think gene therapy is one of our lesser worries.

So yes, we should.

It depends. If gene therapy is going to keep someone from dying, isn't it a reasonable risk?

That being said, I don't know much about human gene therapy.

Something should never be done JUST because it can be. However, if you mean something like replacing a mutated copy of a tumor supressor gene to ameliorate cancer then yes. As far as I know that isn't possible yet though.

Gene therapy hasn't been very affective, so no. I wouldn't use it.
