Why don't you just pump your own gas. You can do this unless you live in Jersey where the government figures people in that state are way to stupid to do it themselves.

No. I am from Jersey, where we are not allowed to pump our own gas and no one tips the gas station attendants. Now in traveling to other states when gas station attendants see you are from Jersey they sometimes will offer to pump your gas thinking you are going to tip them, but if they know like I know they will stay in their booths because we do not tip in Jersey. Also in other states they charge you more for full service anyway, so their tip is included in the price of the gas.

Historically, no. I pumped gas a long time ago and never got a tip in my life. At least that I can remember.

It depends... in states that don't allow you to pump your own gas, I would say no.
In my state, they have self-serve and you can rarely find full service. If they have this option, I would say yes.

Common courtesy says yes, particularly if the weather is nasty (i.e. really cold or windy) and they save you from having to be out in it. Honestly, what's an extra dollar or two going to hurt? Imagine their surprise if you tip them and they weren't expecting it!

It's a courtesy, especially if he does other things for you, like checking oil and fluids, washing the windshield, etc.
Sure he gets paid for it, but does he go the little extra distance for you, making you feel "special"?
