I think that all depends on you and your significant other. If you are close to your family and know the story(or stories) behind why the name was started/carried on, then use that to help make your decision. If you feel like it was carried on or given to you just for the sake of carrying it on, then think about that.
As far as giving your child his or her own identity, wait until a few months after they are born and use their character and identity to think up a nickname that they could be called.

You should carry on your name... I am from a long line of guys with the same name and I think that it is great to be part of something that has gone back for over a hundred years. I would give your child the "fifth" as a gesture of respect to your family, especially your father.

As a woman, I feel that children should have their own name and not be named after the father...It seems that you name comes from a long line. I guess it depends if you want to keep the tradition going or do you want to give your son a new start.

It depends how important it is to you to carry on the tradition. I mean, it takes four generations to get to the IV and once that chain is broken, it is broken. Although, do what you want. My brother was a Jr. and I always got confused when people would call on the phone and ask for "Steve" because I didn't know if they were asking for my dad or my brother!

Just see if you like the name. How did it effect you growing up and did you hate your parents for naming you that? If you dont like your name and decide not to name him this he may be grateful to you! lol

I say it depends. Did you like your name growing up? If you didn't then I would say don't. Are you close to your family? If so, go for it. If the name doesn't mean anything to you then why stick with it just for tradition?

I believe you have a wonderful name to carry on. I love that families keep up with Traditions. I am not sure what your nickname is.. but with your name .. you can pull up many of them. Thad, Tad, Jamie, TJ... I love it.

I usually don't like when people name their kids after them because I feel the child should have his/her own identity, but in this case it would be kind of cool because it is 5 generations! :)

Ask your parents how they feel about it. You never know that it might be a tradition to name your child after yourself.
