Does anyone know of a safe, inhalable gas, to which colour and scent could be added, simulating cigarette smoke. The gas should not give off toxic substances when released, so can't be burnt. I was thinking, if the top end of substitute cigarette was lit, burning the end, this would cause the area behind it to heat up. This heating up could then release a gas which when combined with colouring chemicals and scent could simulate cigarette smoke.

When I worked in industry, I was working on developing a biodegradable cigarette filter so I was involved with a lot of research that the cigarette companies were doing.

They actually have, and I still think I have a pack of them hidden around somewhere - smoke-less cigarettes. The looked just like real cigarettes, but were very different. Inside the tip was a metal cylinder that contained tobacco extracts and other "propriatary" additives (probably nicotine).

You would light the thing like a regular cigarette and the taste and draw was about the same, except - there was NO - I mean NONE - smoke! There was no ash either, there was no tobacco in it, so you didn't have to keep flicking it. It just got black at the end as it went down.

They never took off. People didn't want them - they said - if you are going to smoke - you might as well have the smoke! I agree, but I see the relevance for the development of these prototypes, anyway.

Funny thing though when I tried to board an airplane with a pack of these things in my pocket and the metal detector went NUTS - all those metal parts in the tips - that was hard to explain without ripping one of the cigs apart in front of airport security.

The risks are lung cancer and heart disease, among others. Unfortunately, just like every other addiction, the addict has exactly the same answer 'it won't happen to me'. I used to joke about only smoking the kind of cigs that cause low fetal birthweight in pregnant women. I was fairly lucky, I was still young, and hadn't been smoking for very long, or very heavily. It was still strange - because someone gave me a pipe and some tobacco for christmas one year. I like the way it tasted, so for a week or two I would just puff on it. I had left a pack of cigs on the mantel, and so one day I grabbed it, and lit one up - they were stale and nasty, so I put it out, and grabbed the pipe. Now, I could've easily just traded one habit for another, but fortunately the pipe is a pain to pack, get lit, keep it burning, and clean it out. I would smoke it from time to time, but it got less and less. Now I smoke the occasional cig, but they make me nauseous (which is great). I would suggest giving her a pipe - most tobacco stores have them. They have all sorts of varieties of tobacco (without all of the chemicals that are in cigarette tobacco and on the papers) - get a few samples so she can try them out. It may or may not work, but it's worth a shot. Besides the nicotine addiction (its been proven that tobacco companies have been slowly adding more nicotine to their cigarettes for the last decade or so to make them more addictive) there is also an oral fixation, which the pipe can help with. One of the funniest episodes of 'my name is earl' was where he was trying to quit smoking, along with helping his friends mother quit. He said: 'someone said you could substitute carrot sticks, but we couldn't get 'em to light' You can also resort to dirty tricks like the old 'exploding cig' trick - available in most novelty stores, but that'll most likely just piss her off more.
