There are two answers to this question:

Any group of people (society) makes decisions on group norms. In general these tend to be what makes the group function well. People with in the society who violate the rules of that society usually pay a price for that infraction.

Each person who is a fully functioning human being needs to decide for themselves if the norms of the society they live in are justified. There is tremendous pressure from the society to accept their norms as "given." But as has been noted above those norms change over time. That change usually begins when a group of people (sometimes only one) challenge the existing norms as not being just.

So, what have YOU decided about the norms of the society you live in? Just or not? Are you willing to force a change? Lastly, are you willing to pay the price that such a change will demand?

We all got together and decided YOU will get your turn next week, between 3:15pm and 4:15 pm. But, until then, you will sit down, keep your mouth shut, and do as you're told. Is that what you wanted to hear? (Can't you just see the nun with the ruler?)

It has always been YOUR decision to decide what to approve and what to condemn. However, you will be held accountable for those decisions and any action based on those morals.

The second hardest thing in the world is to defend your decisions. The hardest? To make an unpopular decision that is "right". We all need to work through a poor decision and how we take "accountability" for that. Learn and earn the "new & improved" responsibility to determine right from wrong.

The definition of right and wrong are not absolute. What's legal or illegal are not a good definition to go by either. For example abortion is legal but viewed wrong by some. You decide what is right and wrong for yourself. As a society we take a vote and if the majority decides something is wrong then we make it illegal. Religion, politics, culture are more so influences that help us decide what we think is right or wrong. There is a tribe I read about once that had no concept of property. Everything belonged to everyone. Here if someone went into your home and took your clothes that would be stealing, but in that tribe the clothes didn't belong to just one person. So there would be no such thing as stealing. So what may seem to be wrong here maybe quite normal somewhere else.

While one needs to come to their own decisions on any of these topics, society does have say in what is right and wrong. The question becomes, when looking at it globally, what cultural group is "more" right. I don't believe any one person has the right to judge that. Live your life with no regrets and you will live a just life.

Society and governments will make laws that affect all of those things and make it illegal to do things that are harmful to other people. But these issues can't be "decided" ever. They are always in a constant state of discussion and change in every society. All you can do is figure out what you believe.

I completely agree with Bruce's answer.
Society does indeed dictate the norms of behavior...from societies point of view.
However,an individual should decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong.
While society may accept behaviors that you, personally, find alarming, it is up to you to govern yourself as you see fit. Sometimes you will be in opposition to society, sometimes in advance, and sometimes in agreement. Always true to yourself.
Be prepared to stand by your decisions...

Societies ideas about what is Right and wrong is what is known as consensus reality.

I like to think of it as the popular fantasy.

Follow it if you want but its a lot more interesting to find your own way.

I agree with the first person. Society sucks. They are like a babies diaper. Always on you A** and usually full of Sh**. And the TV is busy trying to brain wash everyone.

Each person needs to make their own decisions. You can't allow society to choose what's right, because societies have accepted some pretty awful things (slavery, legalized rape).

Society may have its views on what is wrong, and what is right, but I suppose what's right and what's wrong to *you* depends on your morals, and values. If you want it spelled out for you, you could always read the bible as it clearly lays out what you should and shouldn't do.
