There's really not much at all that a 14 year old boy can get into legal trouble for looking at online. Now, if he was looking at kiddie porn, then absolutely he can get in serious trouble, and very well should.

My advice to you, is to get some really good parental control software, something that he couldn't unlock or anything. You need to put something on there that blocks out all innapropriate sites. I know they sell stuff like that at Office Depot and places like that. You should really look into getting one.. either that, or get rid of the computer. Either way, you need to put an end to that kind of behavior, right now.

Best of luck!

There is a lot of freedom with what people can post and view on the internet, so probably not. Things that could get him in trouble are sexual pictures of children, pictures that combine bondage and sex (naked bondage OK, hurting people during sex not), and pictures that show a crime being committed.

Illegal or not, if he is viewing awful things, you should want to find out why. It could be mere curiosity and a wish to see something gory and unique, or really bizarre. It could be a serious problem. Look at other personality clues to decide which.

It all depends on what he's looking at, but it's possible. If the police haven't knocked on your door yet, then he might be in the clear, but I'm no lawyer. I'd say delete the stuff from the HDD but I heard that the 5-0 know how to get it back anyway. Just take the computer away altogether.

It may be possible for him to be arrested for obscenity, depending on your local laws.

YOU might be arrested for neglect, contributing to delinquency and maybe even child abuse for not doing something about it now that you know about it.

Now, go be a parent. Remove the computer from his room, only allow him to use the computer when a parent is present, and talk to him about what he was looking at.

I believe it is up to the parent to supervise the child while using the Internet. If the guidelines to appropriate usage are not being followed, there should be a meaningful, real life consequence. Good luck!

If what he was looking at was illegal then whoever owns the computer can be arrested. You'll have to find a way to prove it was him by showing that he was signed into an account and actively using it.

NICK, UNFORTUNATELY WITH THE WEB THIS IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. IT IS UNREGULATED.
YOUR STEP SON IS PROBABLY VISITING PORN SITES BECAUSE IT'S EXCITING AND 'NAUGHTY' TO DO. YOU CAN PUT BLOCKING SOFTWARE TO LIMIT ANY BROWSING AT THESE SITES. CERTAIN ISP's LIKE A.O.L. HAVE PARENTAL SECURITY PROTECTION. IF ALL ELSE FAILS, TAKE AWAY THE COMPUTER. EVEN THOUGH IT IS VERY USEFUL FOR SCHOOLWORK, TEENAGE BOYS CAN EASILY MISUSE IT.

No.

But you can install filters that can help to keep him from such sites.

The best such filter, though, is having the family computers in one room that is used by the whole of the family. That's simply because the best filters available are responsible adults who provide supervision. You can't supervise his computer use if he's using it in his bedroom.

no he cannot be arrested but he should take caution when browsing pornographic sites. some of them install spyware and popups. others might trick him into charging $$$ for minutes spent online/on the phone. and of course, be aware that sexual acts with minors is a state offense.

Well, I don't really know what we browsing is? But was he also masterbating? If so, you should put some sand and habenero sauce in his lube. This will teach the little pervert a lesson!
