as a bt home hub user i can honestly tell you that it will not harm your home hub if you turn it off when you turn off your laptop
however,i say it wont harm but security wise ,its a total pain, when you turn off your hub any security settings will be returned to factory settings so if you have changed your w.e.p key you need to reset it or it will stay on the defualt key thats on the back of your hub
i leave my hub on as do most users i know, and there is no harm to leave it on
is the reason you want to turn off your laptop so no one can use the wireless connection,if so here is the way to change a w.e.p key on the home hub
click hub manager, then go to advanced and then continue to advanced, then when asked for username and password just use the word admin for both and then press ok
the go to wireless>security>then scroll to the bottom and change your password, once you have changed it press apply and then ok
note: w.e.p key must be 1 letter and 9 numbers
then when you are asked for your wep key enter your new key.........easy
good luck

The answer is Yes, but you'll be hard pushed to find someone to tell you how much it'll damaged by.
Like most modern electronic devices the Hub is fairly resilient. However, there is an effect called Thermal Shock which affects small electronic components and shortens their lives. This occurs when a physically delicate structure such as the tiny junctions inside microchips rapidly heat and cool.
Switching on an off will increase the number of times the device experiences this effect and so it will fail much sooner than it would if it was just left alone. Of course, nobody will be able to tell you exactly how much its life will be shortened by.
Switching off also means it can take up to 25 minutes to get back on line again.
The current consumption is so low that you wouldn't notice it unless you're leaving it on unused for more than a couple of days.
You will save more electricity if you unplug your laptop's power unit from the mains when you've finished a session.

ah yes, i've read about this somewhere before. no you won't damage the hub.
it is more environmentally sound to turn off all electronic devices if you're not using them. aside from the energy savings and benefit to the environment, you lessen the risk of machine hardware failure because there is less wear & tear.

No, but it won't hurt it to leave it on either.
