in a nutshell, a wave mean forwads and backwads right? and the wave also has to be moving right? so the difference comes from the relative direction of the back/forwad movement of the wave to that which the wave is travelling.
in transverse waves, visualize running ahead (wave direction) while jumping up and down Back/forward direction) while in longitudinal you run ahead two steps (wave direction) and back one step. so you go forward in the long run but you are still going back and forth.

transverse wave is where the wave crest is a 90 degrees to the wave direction. light is a transverse wave. longitudinal waves have wave crests that are orientated in the direction that the wave is travelling. sound is a longitudinal wave

Longitudinal wave; direction of periodic displacement is in the same direction as ( or parallel to) the direction the wave is travelling in, eg sound waves in a liquid or gas.
Transverse wave: direction of periodic disturbance is at right angles to the direction the wave is travelling, eg waves on the surface of water, waves on a plucked string, light waves.
