It could be, one of a dozen sensors have picked up an unusual signal and has thrown the light on.
Has your wife nearly stalled the car and caught it just in time??, things like that will bring the light on.
Has the car become difficult to start???
If so one of the sensors has stopped working properly and will need replacing.
When you take the vehicle in for it's service mention it to the receptionist and they'll make a note on the workshop job card so that the Technician will perform a diagnostic on the car.

When you leave the vehicle in for a service they can plug in a code reader to the engine management system and sort the problem. Your problem could be any number of things. Not enough information to give an idea of the problem.

If you have an autozone close by take it there and they will tell you what's causing the light to go on. I would assume it's the check engine light. This is usually cause by an O2 Sensor being bad easy to replace around 50-100 for the part.

It may be one of a hundred or so problems and you need an obd reader to read the code. If the car is due for service, be certain to point out the light to the mechanic.

Could be. I have a similiar system in my BMW, using a colour coding system. Green means OK, amber means service required and RED means urgent attention required. Get some mechanic to look at it.

Take it to a reputable private mechanic (aviod dealer franchises..you'll pay the earth!) and get them to give it a quick check on their ACR tester. They should be able to sort it for you easily if its just a code fault..cost about £40 or less

You can probably get it scaned for free at a local parts store. Regular maintance issues won't usally cause the light to come on.
