Open media player and to go the Tools menu then Options. Go to the Media Library tab and click the Monitor Files button. Then click the Add button and add the folder you moved the files to on the external drive.

The reason the external drive stays on is because it is powered by an external power source that does not turn on and off with the computer. They usually have a button on them that will turn them on and off.

You'll have to remove all the files from the Windows Media Player and tell the program where the music is at so it can find it and give you a list there where you can play the music. Look towards the bottom of the WMP. There should be an option that says Add Music. Just direct it to your external drive and it should find the music.

The external drive has it's own power source, so each time you turn off the PC you will have to either unplug it or turn off the external drive using the power button.

Since you transferred the files you are going to need to do what you did when you initially added your music to the media player. You could simply drag and drop.

The drive has it's own power supply which is not controlled by the computer, you would need to turn the switch on the back of the drive off.

There should be a power switch on the side or back of the external drive that will let you turn it off when you aren't using it. Since it is an external device, it won't power off when you shut down your PC.

You should be able to go into Windows Media Player and tell it to go to the J: drive to look for your music.

if all the files are on your external drive then youmay 'just' need to set the path where music player should look for your music files.

if you use an external drive then alwyas make sure that you commit all writes prior to turnign off the PC (on an XP system select the 'safely remove hardware' option on the toolbar (bottom right). modern operating systems dont write stuff as soon as you tell them.. soemtimes the caching the writing of the data or updating the system files on the disk.. thats why you should never turn off external disks or memory sticks without going through the remove hardware process.

if the computer is turned off its safe to disconnect the external disk by removing the power.

DON'T PANIC! :)

Open Windows Media Player. Find the menu (little down arrow near the minimise button). Click it, select tools, select options.

Go to the Library tab and click "monitor folders". Click "add" and browse to your J drive.

The external drive should have an on/off switch on the back, but they generally power down after a certain amount of inactivity.

Don't worry, just go to my computer on the screen and open drive J, select the music rather than trying to open it through the Media Player.

the reason why you don't have your music or files and folders in media player is because you moved them from your C drive to your new drive - if you want to have them on both drive just use the backup trick next time.
Regarding your new drive you should be able to switch it off from behind if you did the right thing

If your files are on the external just open media player and then go to "File" then "open" and browse for your files.

All you will prefer are 2 issues. a super exterior not basic-tension (160Gb would be high-quality whether it may well be extra competitively priced to get something extra advantageous) and a few disk replica utility. i'd propose Acronis for the copying the records. this would take an entire image of your not basic tension and write it to the exterior tension. in the adventure that your computing device desires re-installation interior the destiny, in basic terms plug interior the exterior not basic-tension and replica the image returned.
