Perry Como was known in the UK as 'Mr Relaxation' because of his warm personality and cooler-than-cool style of performing on stage and on his late 50s/early 60s TV series.

He passed away six days short of his 89th birthday; he was born in May 1912, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.

During the 50s Perry had a huge string of hits in the UK, including two #1 singles {Magic Moments" c/w "Catch A Falling Star" from 1958 and "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes" from 1953; the latter also peaked at the top rung in the US; "Hot Diggity", "Tina Marie", "Delaware" amongst them.

However, the invasion of Merseymania caused Perry's records to slump in sales, along with many other srtists. But in the early 70s he returned to the British charts with romantic gems like "For The Good Times", "I Think Of You", "And I Love You So". Perry even had a Top 40 hit here by covering the Everly Brothers 1961 chart- topper, "Walk Right Back".

One of the finest voices to come out of America.

Perry was born one of 13 children to the Como family. They lived in a small coal mining community in PA. Perry had always aspired to be a barber. He worked in a barbershop after school. He was determined not to be a part of the coal mining business as almost most of the towns folk worked in. Perry had his heart set on owning his own barbershop and began the process of buying one making installments on one. While Como would cut hair he would sing to his customers. As suggested by many who frequented his shop told Perry to go into singing as he entertained them all with his Italian ballads. Como would often cut his friends hair for free if they could not afford to pay. Unsure if he wanted to go into show business. But the encouragement was so strong from his clientele that he sold his shop and set for the to pursue his career in the entertainment world.

I absolutely agree with you about Perry Como. I loved his show on TV and when I hear his Ave Maria, I am always very moved. I remember somehow knowing that he was a barber. I enjoyed learing some of your facts about him.
