There isn't really an "American" section of London as there is with some ethnic groups. West London is very nice though. I'd recommend you check out some of those areas. Try Ealing, Acton, Northfields, Chiswick, or Richmond for nice areas with lots of parks and open space. East London is less expensive but it's also not as nice as West London. The important thing is to get a place with good transportation links. It's worth paying more to be near the tube if you can afford it. Being able to walk to/from a tube stop is very handy. Also, look for someplace that is close to shops and restaurants. It's nice to be just a block or two off the high street so that it's easy to get groceries or stop off for a pint.

There is no real "Best Place" for an American in London. Since England is the home of the English language, there is no fear of not being able to understand what's going on around you. It's really all about your personality and what you feel comfortable doing. Some people love South London, but others can't be pulled from North of the river.

If you can live in or near central London, I would suggest that simply because you're near everything. But whenever I go to the UK the people are always nice and welcoming. I never felt that certain areas were anti-American, as they were when I visited the Middle East. If you are looking to integrate in to British society (make British friends, etc) while you are there, then I say anyway where you feel comfortable is good. If you are looking for some sort of "Americantown" (like Chinatown) in London, then I'm afraid I can't help you.
