I think any one who apreciates film to any degree would not be able to answer that question. There are far too many factors I would personally have to consider. If the question was broken down into categories like genre, era, mood, etc. that would be a start although it would still only be scratching the surface. Even if pressed i would still have to give at least three answers for three differnt reasons: Godfather (Part 1) for the ensemble cast and direction, Young Frankenstein for the sublime humour and writing, and Apocalypse Now for the visual/audio and emotional trip.

I don't think anyone can come close to accomplishing what Peter Jackson did in Lord of the Rings. The epic size of it all. The cinematography, the cast, the soundtrack. I think everything was brillantly done.
