A Parker Fly Deluxe II has way better action and you can switch between electric and a pizo pickup to emulate accoustic sounds.
Also Jackson Makes some Sick stuff.
Both of those are about $2k.
If money is an issue, check out e-bay, i got a gibson les paul studio, 1 year old for 500 bucks. thats like half price.
(the studio is a shaved down, smaller body design than the regular les)
Also SG's were on sale last month at guitar center something like 600-700 bucks.
If you get a fender make sure its an American or a wellmade Mexican Strat. dont buy the 200 dollar strat its a piece of junk.

Everyone has different tastes in guitars. For me, I love my '79 Gibson Les Paul Custom. I have a buddy who makes his own guitars (and does a very good job), and I have another buddy who just bought a Paul Reed Smith and says he'll never buy a guitar from any other maker. Who's right? Well, none of us are wrong, and we all love our particular guitars for our own reasons. I like mine because it's a nice looking heavy guitar that doesn't move around and has a wide neck (I really like ebony fretboards too), and I just love the sound I get out of it. Can't play thrash/grunge with it, but why would you want to with a classic like a Les Paul?

I have an old Gibson Explorer. The guitar is still incredible but heavy as hell!!! I also had a mid 70s Black Beauty Les Paul ...Sold it like a dummy!
I have a telecaster that plays decent...
But on the more modern end. Paul Reed Smith custom I own is the best of my collection

Gibson Custom Black Beauty.... But it's a guitar you will probably never own without a few thousand dollars to spend
Edit: I like how a few people said brands and not an actual guitar itself...funny
And how some people said SG...Because It's not the best, but i SURE DO LOVE MINE

I would think a
1/Gibson SG.
2/Gibson Les PAUL
3/Fender Stratocaster
4/Fender Telecaster
Thats on looks for me personaly and not going crazy, there is also the sound to consider and what kind of music you planning to play.

A pre-CBS Fender Stratocaster takes some beating, but a Les Paul from around 1960 will do the job for you too, if you have about $30,000 to spare.

I personally like a Les Paul...but guitars are all a matter of personal taste for looks and sound.

Let's not forget bass guitars, Rickenbacker, Gibson EBO and that graphite job from the 80's.

I'm partial to my Fender Stratocaster but the Gretch White Falcon would be AWESOME to have...if I could afford it! Les Pauls are nice, too, but a bit on the heavy side.
