Got a great site for you

Hold on a moment

This is the autobiography of a Mr. Hempher who was a spy for Britain in the late 1700's. It is a long tale full of the truth of why they were in the countries and what they did. He mentions China and India in passing at the beginning and what they did to win those countries. (introduction of opium and the use of disease and other nasty method). It is not flattering to know what the British did to win the empire.
What they did in the Middle East is shocking. This is a book so you might have to actually do a little reading, luv.

You will find your answers on the table on this page. It lists when it became part of the Commonwealth and when they left it. You can do the math!

Any good history book will list the colonies for you. The reasons why are quite complex. Colonial expansion began in the 1600s. New inventions, maps, and ideas began the race for wealth and power. Just before WWI, Europe was embroiled in competition for literally everything. Colonies, in the past, had proven to be financially significant, and nations raced to have more. Britain, based on the success in India, continued to expand its empire. Colonies provided valuable natural resources, manpower, prestige, and markets to sell British made goods. The more the merrier as the saying goes.
