lol cute one! your right,,,, i had never thought about that, i guess for the same reason we drive cars,,,,,, ride a bicycle,,, fly a plane , we never say drive the plane

I would say it's because we get IN a car to drive it. We get ON a bus or train though because someone else is driving and we're along for the ride.

Mostly because we are in charge of getting the car from point A to B. While on a bus or train it is someone Else's responsibility to get us to our destination.

Just guessing, but maybe size matters here. It's a proper play on/with words. I have been on a car, but never on a bus or train,tho I have ridden in all three.

We came by car or by train or by air...or by bus, even by foot. U don't COME IN or COME ON these things.

Because we drove it. We are not in the front seat of the other vehicles. Even if you are in the back you have the "back seat drivers" thus the feeling of being in control.
