Math? When feeding an infant? Really? Feed the baby when the baby is hungry. Let the baby eat how much the baby wants to eat. Babies have automatic "switches" that tell them when they are hungry and when they are full. When you take the baby in for its checkups, the doctor will talk to you about the baby's feeding habits and talk to you if he or she thinks the baby is under or over weight and how to manage that. I don't think math is the right way to go. My son wasn't 14 pounds until he was nine months old. I don't know if the math equation would have worked for him. I fed him when he was hungry.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that for each pound a baby weighs they should consume 2 1/2 oz of formula. Although a baby who is consuming more than 32 oz. a day is eating to much and may be ready for solids depending upon the age.

You should always give food on demand for the first year. If you give ample opportunity for floor time, holding, travel and such then they will not eat out of bordom and will eat when they are hungry. There is no magic number that each baby should eat. Metabolism varys from person to person so the best way is to always feed them when they are hungry. :)

With that said, I believe the AVERAGE amount that they will eat in that period is 32 oz.

APPROXIMATELY 35 ounces. Varies per child but general guideline is 2.5 ounces per pound of weight per 24 hours.

DRs have told me at least 2 oz per lb a day. So going by that a 14lb baby should take 28 oz per day. They also said if they're eating more than 32oz per day that its too much and you should talk to dr about solids.
As for my son who weighs roughly 9lbs he eats about 20-25oz per day. So really just feed them when they are hungry. If they are getting less than recommended talk to your dr.
