My Mégane has never needed to be topped-up in 45,000 miles.
It has to be changed every 18,000 miles (old oil drained, then filled with new oil), and a new filter fitted. You can do this yourself, but if you are not sure what you are doing its best to get a garage to do it.

Most Renaults have oil-level indicators - see your manual to see if you have one - that check the oil level when you turn on the ignition, and warn you if it is low. If you don't have one, use the dipstick every couple of weeks to check the level (again see the manual) If it is not low, it does not need to be topped-up.

This is quite easy to do yourself. We shall assume that you can open the bonnet of the car, then locate the dipstick (if you're not sure where it is refer to the owners manual/handbook). You should have a clean dry piece of cloth or even a piece of kitchen towel will do, carefully remove the dipstick and wipe of any excess with the cloth/kitchen towel. You will see on the dipstick near the bottom, some marks that are spaced apart or even letters i.e. MAX MIN. This is the oil level indicator guide. You should never let the oil get below the minimum level as this could cause serious (and maybe expensive!) damage to the engine. If you do need to top up with oil, locate the oil filler cap, (again this should be in the owners manual/handbook). Carefully remove the cap and gently pour in a small amount (about a teacupful at a time) of the correct oil into the hole.To find the correct type of oil I would recommend that you go to a reputable car spares/accessories shop something like Halfords and ask, they will be only to pleased to help as they want your custom!. After topping up the oil, and checked that it is at the MAX limit on the dipstick, don't forget to replace the oil filler cap securely and clean up any spillages. This little task should be done at least one a week every week depending on how many miles you do. Remember..if in doubt.. do it.

Normally after a year or after you've driven 12000 miles, Whichever comes first.
Check the oil from dipstick if its really dark (BLACK) its time to change, If its choclate brown then just leave it for some time.
Changin oil yourself will involve in getting under the car and its a messy job. Coz you need to change the oil filter as well, Flush the engine as well. SO unless you know a bit about changing oil Dont do it yourself.
You can get manuals on internet as well which show you how to change oil and stuff.Search for them and if you feel comfortable after that go for it.

Above was about changing the OIL.
To Top up you need to check engines dipstick level. While the engine is hot. Take it out Wipe it with tissue the n put it back again take it out and check the level of oil. Level should be between high and low marker on the stick (Car should be on level surface). You can fill up urself, Check owner manual for exact location on the engine.

This is an awfully scary question in all honesty. How do you not know how to check your oil I thought it was all part and parcel of your driving test these days. I would ask your dad to show you exactly what you need to do and PAY attention.
