To explain sexuality to your child

My daughter is 5 and my step brother is gay as is her god-father and most of my best mates. I have so far told her that everyone is different and the world would be boring if we were all the same.

When they are old enough to ask the right question, then they will be old enough to hear the right answer. Until that time, kids are not interested in the ins and outs of same sex relationships. Just say 'they like/love each other'. Take it one step at a time. Children are inquisitive, so let them ask.
I was asked by a ten year old, 'Are you having him or what?' after replying in the affirmative, she replied. 'Oh, OK'. Children are not stupid and they are more adaptable than adults give them credit for.

I explained to my Daughter that I am gay & that means I have girlfriends instead of boyfriends when she was about 7 or 8.That may seem like a vey young age but at the time my relationship with my current partner was getting vey serious & I knew the issue could no longer be avoided as she was 'the one'!My Daughter took it all in her stride & has been a well adjusted, happy individual since, cos she knows i'm happy. My partner,my Daughter & I have ben a family ever since & 10 years on our Daughter has a good understanding of the fact that people are sometimes different-in fact,a lot of gay teens at school go to her for advice on how to deal with their feelings because they know she won't judge them.

I think it depends on the individual circumstances but probably the younger the better as it is easier to accept things before other kids & adults have given you incorrect & negative ideas about sexuality. I don't have children of my own, but my niece is 9 & she took it in her stride about me & my partner being together. She is quite young for her age so perhaps aged 6 or 7 would be be fine in more grown up children but all kids are different so it depends on when you think the time is right. I think a good rule would be: if they start to ask questions don't lie.
