I am currently a college student renting a house in Wisconsin. It is a very old home with many problems. Recently our 2nd floor bathtub faucets have been leaking. We've tryed everything to stop this. It's been running down cracks and started leaking through the ceiling panels on the 1st floor. Our landlord knows about this problem and has done nothing to fix it.

I am very concerned about mold since i have bad allergy and sinus problems. Is this something a landlord is respondible to fix?? Or do i just have to suffer through being sick all the time? (we have 4 buckets under the celing right now to catch the water) (It's a lot of water!) If she wont fix it, is there some kind of renter regulation place we can report this to?

Please help! What is your next step??

Are you in Madison? (Which could not possibly be more tenant friendly btw.)

Contact the tenant resource center for assistance. They'll probably direct you to call the city building inspector. If there is a violation you can pay to have the problem fixed and deduct the bill from your rent.

Your landlord is being foolish not to fix that problem, as water damage is expensive to fix once it occurs. Dealing with a problem like this quickly saves a lot of money in the long run.

(The tenant resource center will help you no matter where you are in Wisconsin.)

Did you sign a lease? If so, there is usually a provision that the landlord must keep the premises in good living condition. You may want to bring this up, and inform the landlord that this is a way for you to break the lease.

The owner is responsible. Go to your local courthouse, they should have a 'library' that would have information regarding renters rights. Or go to a regular library and get info there.
