Let's look to the Constitution. National security.

You can make charitable donations...and you can make a donation to national security by serving in the military or domestic police forces.

However, you can not purchase an aircraft carrier or F-16 for national security - unless you've got Bill Gates or Oprah kind of money.

But it is very simple to dontate your time, money or goods to a charity which you think is worthy and provides services to a demographic that is important to you.

It is therefore important for government to support both. National security because it does the "most good for the most people at the same time" (big picture Macro-view). Charity because they are doing good at the local level, providing the "most good to those the most in need" (smaller focus, Micro-view)

National security requires an organized force, beyond the capabilities of average citizens. It is a prime candidate for a job that should be the domain of the federal government only. Charity on the other hand can be carried out by the government, or as little as one individual, successfully.

obviously the government cannot be trusted with national security or defense. The defense budget of the U.S. is the same as all of the other countries in the world combined. Yet , when Bush starts a war, we have to include the National Guard and the Reserves. Not to mention that troops on the ground did not have the adequate protection they needed. Where does all that money go?????

The individual is not capable of handling national security... unless you've got a few trillion to put into building your own military.

Charity, on the other hand is something that should be handled at the invididual level.

I wouldn't trust the government to clean up after the President's dog. I'll take care of my own charitable and national security decisions, thank you.

national security should be the governments job, but the average person can always help by staying informed.
