For me to decide to which charity to give my money, or for the government to take my money and decide for me?

pip I am tempted now to award this question to you, for so clearly illustrating twisted liberal thinking: pre-judge and always assume people are less capable than the government, government is your God, individuals can't be trusted

that would depend on which definition of moral you accept, and which entity is more moral by that definition.. you or the government? .. for all we know you are a follower of Ted Bundy...
Edit: I judge neither you nor the government in that statement.. all it states is that I don't know your definition of moral, nor do I know how you or the government compare, seeing as how I know nothing about you other than a few words on Y!A

Sorry, I just had to laugh that there was a sentence naming our government and morality in the same breath.
The best thing would be for our government to use the money it takes for good, however, we are now paying for an illegal war of our own in Iraq as well as continuing to pay for the illegal occupation of Palestine. BILLIONS each and every year goes to Israel, a country slightly smaller than the state of New Jersey, to aid them in their ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Meanwhile, our own soldiers go without the high tech gear that Israeli soldiers use daily (which we have paid for) to guard against the 10 year old rock throwing Palestinian boy.
If you can afford to do so, give money to reputable organizations in spite of all of the money the government takes. Just make sure the organization is reputable and actually uses the money to help the needy and not line their own pockets.

well, the only problem with that is... many people wouldn't give... and don't give...
if everyone gave... there would have never been any poor people to begin with... there is more than enough money to go around right now... and always has been...clearly...
so, your question is based on the HUGE assumption that people will give... which historically... they simply won't...
so, here is the ACTUAL QUESTION... which is more moral... for the government to take your money, or to let people die in the streets?
I think it's more moral to take your money... which is more important... money or human life? that's a fairly simple question to answer if you ask me...
your question is like me asking... should I stay home and not sin, or go to church and confess my sins? it's about as likely that I won't sin that people will give anywhere near enough to charity...

Since I'd have trouble believing a con can make a rational decision about what charities are best served, I'll go with the government.

And there you have the difference between conservative and liberal. Do you believe in freedom or slavery? I believe my fellow man is basically decent, and will help me when I'm in need. Liberals believe their fellow man is evil, therefore it is morally acceptable to enslave them in government programs (for their own good, of course).
..EDIT..
g is a perfect example. He does not know that people will not give to charity, he just believes it. So based on this belief, with no basis in fact, he decides to put a gun to your head to force you to behave in a manner he thinks is appropriate. That is EXACTLY what whites said about blacks in slavery. They believed that blacks could not take care of themselves. So based on that belief, with no basis in fact, they justified slavery (for their own good, of course). Government programs do not help people, have never helped people, and were never intended to. It is all about power and control. It is slavery, and it is evil. If you support it, you are no better than a slave owner.

Let me asnwer that with a question of my own...how often do you give to the needy person on the street corner? How often have you given to charity? I'm not talking about donating your crappy clothes to Goodwill.

Neither, it would depend on how the funds were applied, and then it would still be relative to your world view.
