Because the circuitry inside can only send a strong enough signal 500 meters before having to be boosted again. The longer the wire, the more signal loss. 500 m is max without any loss.

Think of it this way...
You and your friend are standing on the street talking. The further away you walk apart from eachother, the louder you need to talk for eachother to be heard. Then eventually, you need a bullhorn or PA system to amplify you because it's just too far apart to hear.

I believe 500m is for fiber and 100m is for 10Base-T.

Can you go more? Yes.

The limit is part of the standard probably due to electronic issues such as signal loss and timing delays. The further apart the segments are, the weaker the signal and longer it takes to get there.

Yup signal loss or drop off, the further away, the more signal you need.
