to give the title character predictions in order to influence him & his wife and move the plot along

using a supernatural, "spooky" plotline would have interested Shakespeare's audience when the play was written. the witches help move the plot along by their preminitions, which turn out to be true - and the scenes with the witches add a hella lot of atmosphere to the play as a whole!

He was ahead of his tiem and being creative. Up to that point in history there was no evil supernatural fantasy characters in plays. He was the first to do it.
