On average after a vaginal birth you bleed for 4-8 weeks. Bright red blood on the other hand could be an indication that you need to take it easy and relax. Your body needs time to rest and heal after the trauma of giving birth and physically exerting yourself can make you bleed heavier and for longer. Bright red blood could also be the start of your first "regular" period, it can come as soon as 3 weeks after giving birth, talk to your ob/gyn, take it easy and enjoy these first few weeks with your newborn.

I only bled for about two weeks, but like others are saying here, every woman is different. The thing that struck me about your question is the "bright red blood." That's not normal. If it's been more than seven days of bright blood since the baby's birth, you could be having a complication from childbirth. I would call the nurse advice line for your doctor if that's the case. Good luck!

I did for 6 weeks - don't lift any thing heavier than your baby - that means even the car seat. No work outs or anything either untill it had totally stopped and then if you start an activity and then start bleeding again stop and wait again.

I bled for eight weeks. I gave vaginal birth, did not tear, did not get an episiotimy, and did not need stitiches. I was breastfeeding. I'm sure thoes things make a difference.

Some women are different. I had my boy on Valentine's day, and I have been bleeding since, but it is very light. Your body is making up for nine months of missed periods!

The longest was 13 weeks. I bled like a stuck pig and felt like crap. BUT! The shortest time was 6 weeks and I felt much better. :)

I imagine you have had a 4 week check up..... If there was no complications dont worry everyone is different. If you have not had a check up recently give your midwife or doctor a ring.
