It's an emachine? Did you get it on sale at CompUSA? Well, you won't believe this, but the one I'm working on right now is an emachine too! And what a long history of troubles...right when we got it, let me see, I'm pretty sure we ended up sending it in three times. The first time it was the CD. It wouldn't write or read or anything. Sounds exactly like what you're going through. The second time it was the sound card and speakers, which was replaced at the expense of all my desktop and hard drive programs DELETED (without any warning, too! But they were very nice about it and gave me my programs back, including a new one--Nero--free).

Finally, in the end, we got the CD drive replaced. It cost $70, but eMachines refunded the whole thing. We had to take out the whole drive and send it back in. All I can tell you is...call their number, it should be on the side of your computer monitor or near the bottom of your tower, and explain your problem. eMachines was very helpful with us and replaced everything with little or no cost at all. They even gave us a free CD and everything. As long as you have a warranty on it, but you should--it's a new computer. I could tell you some things to do, but the best would be to call in. That's what we did all throughout.

And this happened to me inside 2 weeks, too! Odd! These things must be getting bad reputations by now, I would think...but the good news is, my PC's been working perfectly fine for a whole half-year now, with little or no trouble at all.

Well number one Hard drives dont play CD's anyway.. you are talking about a CD/DVD drive.. and just because it spins dosent mean it works.. they will still spin even if they are bad.. you could have a bad/scratched CD(does it do it with a buncha cd's?).. your driver may be corrupt.. or the most likely you just have a bad drive. I had to replace my emachines CD/DVD drive about 4 months ago in fact.. but it lasted a lot longer than 2 weeks.. you should still be under warrenty.. send it back would be my advice..

Your CD is scratch or dirty. You need to clean and try it. If that doesn't work, please see if there any scratches on the CD.
