She used some cat-and-nine-tails style whip with little metal claws to rip her victims flesh off their bones. This was while they were hanging naked, upside down and facing her (so she could see how much agony they were in). This was before she got her taste for blood. How THAT happened...

One of her maids made her angry and she hit her across the face. Bathory's nail pierced the skin and she got blood on her. She was convinced that her skin looked younger after her maids blood had been shed on it. She,consulted her 'religious advisors' (fairly sure she had gone into a bit of witchcraft as well). They agreed with her so fell to the task of rounding up young women from around her castle for her to bathe in. She's hang them from the ankles in the same style as before, naked, upside down, facing her, and she's slit their throats, sometimes drinking straight from the body as they were dying. She'd bathe in the blood of others. She's also torture the girls by sticking pins into sensitive places, like under fingernails and gentalia etc

Here's where it gets even more twisted... Eventually, she decided the blood quality of the townswomen wasnt effective enough so she set up a school for noblewomen to come and learn how to 'be a lady' and to learn proper etiquette. This gave her an excuse to keep a large number of young women around for a long period of time. It wasnt until some of the families of these girls became alarmed that they werent hearing from them that there was an enquiry. Her castle was searched and >600 bodies were found.

She and her advisors were apprehended and all but bathory were hung, as she was a Countess, she was exempt. They boarded her up in her bedroom with just a slit in the door for food. She was about 43 at the time. She died in her room and apparantly never uttered any apologies for what she had done.

Another interesting snippet was that her aunt (fairly sure it was the aunt) was a notorious lesbian. Bathory would spend lengthy periods of time at her aunts estate where they'd practice witchcraft and who knows what else they got up to...
