i want to project the signal from my office to my home -about 500 feet away it's relatively clear shot with only a few small trees and no buildings. but it would still have to get into my home... thanks for any suggestions.

Perhaps a stronger antenna (7dbi or better) on the access point and a directional antenna at the computer would do the trick.

I have a D-Link wireless router and wanted to be able to access my own network when down the street. I added the D-Link 7dbi antenna to my router, which is in the 2nd floor corner of my house. This allow allowed me to go about four houses away. Using an external directional network card rather than the built in wireless card allowed another two houses - about 600 feet.

I added a 7dbi antenna, but there are stronger ones available.

Cost might become a factor... directional antennas and a wifi repeater should do the trick. Something like this Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c%3DL_Product_C2%26cid%3D1115416829757&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper) will give you some idea of what can be done. A like device that allows you to add directional antennas will increase range and restrict the signal to a more "point-2-point" patern - adding to your security. Goes without saying that WPA at a minimum should be enabled.
